Make amends this week with someone with whom you have been having a difficult relationship
We listen to the voices
of this world
and neglect to listen
to your voice Lord.
Forgive us for trying
to be all things to all people,

The number 40 is significant in scripture. The Israelites wandered for 40 years in the desert after they were led out of slavery in Egypt. ‘Moses fasted on the mountain in Sinai for 40 days and nights’ (Exodus 24:18). ‘Elijah journeyed through the wilderness without food for 40 days’ (1 Kings 19:8). ‘after His baptism in the Jordan, Jesus went into the wilderness and fasted for 40 days and was tempted by the devil’ (Luke 4:1-13).
We set aside forty days during which we make small sacrifices in order to detach ourselves, to some degree, from the cares and pleasures of the world. This is to prepare our minds and souls to celebrate the Death and Resurrection of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.
The penitential period of Lent is a time to focus on Jesus, and to prepare ourselves to develop a closer relationship with Him through the gift of the people around us and nature. We all have an attitude and a perspective through which we focus on life, does this focus need to be adjusted? Take time out this week to sit, reflect and meditate on your life over the past twelve months.
